Britain on Film poster for 'Plymouth's Pannier Market' (1967)

As the film was about a fresh produce market, I wanted to incorporate this in my approach. I began by documenting the typefaces I could see in the film and developed this by cutting the letterforms into a range of fruit and veg. However, I found the outcome of this initial experiment to be too cluttered and some of the forms were illegible. This then led me to go back to a simpler approach and cleaner result.

Our Lives, Our Stories poster for the gothic film collection

I started by playing with shadow and light, and how this could be manipulated to create an intriguing typographic image.
I experimented with using an overhead projector and acetate sheets, which I scratched with different tools to create texture. I developed this image by adding ink to emulate a blood spatter, but ultimately decided to go back to paper cut type. I chose to create a condensed typeface, as the tension created between the letterforms contributed to the eerie quality of the piece.
